BP has been selected as the official technology partner of the Audi Revolut F1 Team. The partners collaborate closely to develop the power unit and fuel, while BP’s Castrol business develops the specialist lubricants and fluids.
For the first time, all F1 power units must run on FIA-defined advanced sustainable fuels. For competition, BP and the Audi Revolut F1 Team have developed a bespoke fuel, BP Ultimate Racing, which is designed to maximize power unit performance while complying with the 2026 FIA fuel regulations.
At this level, every detail counts and the smallest change in fuel tech can lead to huge advances for elite drivers. “With BP, we have a great collaboration,” said Mattia Binotto, head of Audi F1 Project. “It’s a perfect fit. I don’t even say it’s a partnership – it’s one team working to get the best engine performance.”
Racing fuel development
During development of BP Ultimate Racing, more than 400 pilot fuels were created and over 200 blends tested in the team’s laboratory, with BP technologists working alongside the power unit development team.
The FIA regulations require all teams to use fuels derived from advanced sustainable components, sourced from non-food biomass, renewable non-biological feedstocks or municipal waste.
“We’re developing a brand-new fuel together with the hybrid power unit from scratch,” said Luc Jolly, BP motorsport fluids technology lead. “That’s very different to developing a fuel for an existing engine. We have to evolve the fuel through an intense iterative process.”
