The ACO has revealed that Oreca and Ligier have been awarded the tender to supply the next generation of LMP2 chassis, due to be introduced in 2028. Gibson will supply a new, turbocharged engine.
Details are currently sparse on the technical specifications of the new cars, though it is suggested that they will be marginally larger in all dimensions than the current cars, introduced in 2017. With the pool of chassis suppliers reduced from four to two, it is hoped that performance will be more equitable allowing for both to make a decent business case.
New rules were due to arrive in 2026, based around the current LMDH chassis, but that idea was ditched and an entirely new ruleset drawn up. Currently, it is not known who will provide other major components such as transmissions.
FIA Endurance Commission President, Richard Mille, remarked, “For the engine, we are talking about stability once again. We chose Gibson technology to fit the cars with the engines. Gibson all these years have proven its professionalism and huge performance and client services. It was important for us to be consistent when it comes to the parameters of the performance and measure them efficiently. The only difference is that these engines will be turbocharged.”
