Red Bull Holden Racing has tested a new steering wheel in the Penrite Oil Sandown 500 practice  session.

The new wheel, which features top and bottom cutouts similar to the type used in Formula 1, won’t yet be used in race competition.

Fitted to the number 888 car for the first two practice drives on November 8, the team reverted to its regular componentry for the race weekend.

The sister car, driven by Shane van Gisbergen and Garth Tander, was equipped with the standard steering wheel for the entirety of the race weekend.

Although not confirmed, it is believed that the team was testing the new-style steering wheel to improve ergonomics during pit stops.
