Advanced Heat Treatment and Hard Coatings at Professional Motorsport World

Wallwork, Heat Treatment, coatings, engine technology, show news, drag racing,

On Stand 6070 of the 2017 Professional MotorSport World Expo, Wallwork group, will showcase advanced metallurgical processes and surface engineering products used throughout motor sport from drag racing to F1.

From sites in Manchester, Birmingham and Cambridge the company works with race engineers and their related sub-contractors.

With an extensive research and development capability we work with teams on specific product innovation – enhanced by an impressive material analysis laboratory with a newly launched mechanical testing capability.

Its heat treatment capabilities cover many materials and techniques including case hardening, vacuum treatments, solution and ageing of titanium

Wallwork’s surface enhancement technologies play a major role in reducing friction, increasing wear resistance and prolonging the life of highly stressed engine and gear components. These include PVD coatings along with low friction Carbon thin films such as WCC-H and DLC and a recently developed duplex process called Nitron 100 for Titanium alloys and stainless steels. The company also provides dry lubricating films with both Molybdenum Disulphate and Xylan.

Nitriding is used on motorsport wear parts to create fatigue resistance. A high level of precision enables a high hardness to be achieved without compromising the base metal properties. Camshafts, piston rings, valves and other metal-to-metal contact components all benefit.

Vacuum brazing capacity is expanding from Wallwork’s Cambridge site to Birmingham and Manchester. This method of joining dissimilar metals allows motor sport engineers to form complex shaped profiles and create new parts with great endurance capabilities.

Wallwork has also announced that UK-based Metaltech Ltd is to join its Group. Metaltech also specialises in the thermal processing and coating of metals for the aerospace, automotive, medical device and precision engineering sectors. Each brings additional metal treatments that will complement those of the other.

Metaltech was founded in 1981 by Ron Scott. Dr Graeme Forster joined the company in the early 1990’s and became managing director. Both are qualified Chartered Engineers and they have been highly successful in growing the company to a skilled staff of 22, serving clients in the UK and internationally.

Dr Forster commented, “Joining Wallwork, a firm founded on the same principles of a business that believes people are its greatest asset, is a positive step as Ron steps out to pursue his other interests. More importantly, the deal will ensure the future of the business and employees as well as giving Metaltech the wider product portfolio of the Wallwork Group to offer our clients. The fact that the Wallwork Group are committed to continue processing in the North East was instrumental to the deal”

As well as strengthening the geographical reach for Wallwork, the business extends processes such as the induction hardening of metals and adds new processes including Xylan Flouropolymer Coatings, Molybdenum Disulphide dry film lubricants and Phosphate Coating. It also brings extra capacity to the company’s Plasma Nitriding and Plasox services.
