Malaysian car manufacturer Proton will return to the British Rally Championship for the first time since 2016 this season. Mellors Elliot Motorsport (MEM) will run a Proton Iriz R5 driven by Ollie Mellors.

The result of three years of development work, the Iriz R5 was created by the Derbyshire outfit in-house. Mellors and co-driver Ian Windress will compete in all six rounds of the championship.

“Everything we have done with the Proton since we began the concept in 2017 has seen leaps and bounds in terms of progression,” said MEM director Chris Mellors. “We feel the time is right to launch the Iriz in the British Championship, which we always saw as part of our further progression with the car.”

The team at MEM hopes that the Iriz R5 will play a pivotal role in its plans to reach the FIA World Rally Championship.
