Pirelli presents plans to handle F1 contract
The chairman of the Pirelli Group, Marco Tronchetti Provera, and Pirelli Tire’s managing director, Francesco Gori, have presented the company’s plans for supplying tires to Formula 1 for the three-year period between 2011-2013.
The company’s program includes the creation of a dedicated team for the development and production of Formula 1 tires, consisting of engineers and researchers who have accumulated experience in rallying, Superbike, the Rolex Sports Car Series in North America, and GT racing, as well as various one-make series. This ensures, said Pirelli, that the company’s other divisions remain focused on ongoing business.
The Pirelli Formula 1 team will be an international group based in Milan, the home of Pirelli Tire’s research and development department. The Formula One tires will be produced in the motorsport department of Pirelli’s Izmit factory in Turkey, which is entirely dedicated to competition tires.
Pirelli’s engineers are already working on simulation models and tire compounds (four slick, two wet-weather) suited to the rigors of Grand Prix racing. Pirelli will use the 2011-spec Dallara GP2 car for initial F1 tire testing; it will also supply tires to that series in 2011, in addition to its existing GP3 contract.
Finally, Pirelli has said that, in co-operation with the teams, it is also ready to develop technical evolutions of the current tires for the future, in particular with regard to wheel size.
