Advanced Powertrain Technology Forum

Motorsport continues to drive innovation, especially in hybrid and electric powertrains that turn extreme-performance ideas into everyday technology. The Advanced Powertrain Technology Forum highlighted how motorsport continues to accelerate innovation in hybrid and electric systems, with experts noting that electric power alone has yet to match the capabilities of internal combustion engines.

The company’s high-speed systems, featuring up to 12 lasers and build rates of 1,000ccm/h, produce precision-engineered components that highlight efficiency, productivity and design freedom. On display at the show were examples demonstrating how metal 3D printing is shaping the next generation of production.

“We see PMW as the perfect place to demonstrate industrialized metal 3D printing for automotive,” said Ralf Frohwerk, the company’s global head of business development. “With innovative AM applications already in series production in motorsport and hypercars, we aim to continue as a solution partner revolutionizing design and manufacturing.”

Italtecnica unveils V12 engine with excellent power-to-weight performance

Italtecnica revealed the Orion V12 – a 6.7-liter naturally aspirated engine that merges extreme performance with modern efficiency. Weighing under 200kg, it produces 850hp at 8,500rpm in Euro 6 form and over 900hp at 9,500rpm for track use, with a redline above 10,000rpm. Featuring an advanced intake design, variable timing and lightweight aluminum, titanium and carbon construction, Orion delivers remarkable power-to-weight performance while meeting strict Euro 6 emissions standards.

“We chose to unveil the Orion V12 at PMW because it’s an international benchmark – not only in motorsport but also in the hypercar sector. Our goal is to reach as many interested people as possible,” said Danilo Brossa, technical director of the Italtecnica testing department.

Cosworth is expanding its motorsport product portfolio with its first GT Steering Wheel and the latest addition to its Centaurus Power Distribution Module family, the Centaurus 3, which were both launched at this year’s PMW Expo in Cologne, Germany.

Both the GT Steering Wheel and Centaurus 3 are engineered for the same high-performance motorsport market, offering cutting-edge solutions for teams seeking reliability, adaptability and innovation.

First GT Steering Wheel

Based on Cosworth’s flagship CCW Mk3 steering wheel from the hypercar and IndyCar series, the latest GT Steering Wheel is a race-ready product setting the benchmark for performance, configurability and integration in the GT market.

In a motorsport-first, the GT Steering Wheel features a fully configurable LED light bar for real-time visual feedback. The steering wheel offers teams multiple configurations, removable grips as well as full Cosworth software integration. It also features 12 RGB backlit push buttons, four configurable 12-way rotaries, two thumbwheel encoders and six paddles, including innovative push/pull technology.

When paired with the Centaurus 3 or other Cosworth systems such as Badenia and Antares, the GT Steering Wheel unlocks a user interface designed for seamless and intuitive operation. This aims to enhance integration, streamline setup and improve driver interaction, delivering a unified experience across Cosworth’s ecosystem.

Featuring an advanced intake design, variable timing, and lightweight aluminum, titanium and carbon construction, Orion delivers remarkable power-to-weight performance while meeting strict Euro 6 emissions standards. “We chose to unveil the Orion V12 at PMW because it’s an international benchmark – not only in motorsport but also in the hypercar sector. Our goal is to reach as many interested people as possible,” said Danilo Brossa, technical director of the Italtecnica testing department.

Marelli showcases e-axle system for elite motorsport
Marelli is presenting its Racing Electrical Axle (REA) at the expo. The fully integrated electric axle system is engineered for elite motorsport. Combining a direct oil-cooled motor generator unit (MGU), EDI power pack motor control unit (MCU), single-ratio GBX reducer with active differential and advanced dual cooling system, the REA delivers exceptional power density and efficiency. Its SiC-based inverter technology and enhanced direct-cooling inverter (EDI) system enable ultra-fast power delivery with precise control. Compact, lightweight and thermally optimized, the REA showcases Marelli’s leadership in high-performance electrified drivetrains for the next generation of racing applications.

HP Turbo presents high-performance diesel turbocharger
HP Turbo’s booth features the GTD35-900VR, the company’s latest high-performance diesel turbocharger. Evolving from G to GTD technology, this turbo delivers over 500hp, with OEM reliability and motorsport-grade performance. Designed for the iconic 1.9 TDI platform, its modular construction extends adaptability to BMW performance builds and 4×4 projects. It offers insight into how racing teams and OEMs are addressing the evolving performance and sustainability demands of motorsport and niche vehicle engineering.

In the presentation Developing a hybrid powertrain to deliver a naturally aspirated driving experience – Lamborghini’s new L411, biturbo V8 hybrid, Automobili Lamborghini head of vehicle motion and energy management Davide Bizzarri, will reveal how the company is redefining performance for the hybrid era. Bizzarri will discuss how Lamborghini has engineered the L411’s V8 ICE and electric power integration to meet modern efficiency standards without sacrificing the visceral, emotional driving experience that defines its supercars.

Another session to look forward to is the MissionH24: Pioneers in Hydrogen Endurance Racing panel discussion, which will explore how MissionH24, a collaboration between the Automobile Club de l’Ouest and H24Project, is driving the creation of a hydrogen prototype category for the Le Mans 24 Hours and FIA WEC by 2028. With the motorsport world accelerating toward carbon neutrality, panelists will discuss MissionH24’s role as both a technological demonstrator and catalyst for zero-emission hydrogen mobility — building a complete, competitive and sustainable racing ecosystem. The panelists include Sam Guest, head of telemetry, control and analytics, motorsport, Motion Applied; Bassel Aslan, technical director, MissionH24; Douglas Campling, general manager, motorsport, Fortescue Zero; Michael Muerlebach, director of projects, Bosch Motorsport; and Pierre Tipner, head of engineering sales, Forvia (Hydrogen Solutions)

AM for High-Performance Automotive Symposium

Additive manufacturing has moved from rapid-prototype curiosity to production-critical workflows across motorsport, hypercars, prototype programs and low-volume manufacturing. Sessions in the AM for High-Performance Automotive Symposium will cover use cases such as lightweight structural parts, high-speed printing without the loss of quality, innovations specifically for motorsport and hypercars, and how 3D printing is revolutionizing design and manufacturing in automotive.

Jan Tremel, founder of the center of competence for 3D printing at Robert Bosch, will present the Additive manufacturing for motorsport applications session. This will explore how additive manufacturing (AM) is revolutionizing design, prototyping and production across motorsport disciplines, and how Bosch is transferring these high-performance innovations from the racetrack to series production.

Ralf Frohwerk, global head of business development at Nikon SLM Solutions, will explore how additive manufacturing is redefining performance and production in the automotive world in the Revolutionizing design and manufacturing in automotive forever session. In this presentation, Frohwerk will share how metal AM, particularly the powder bed fusion (PBF) process, is being industrialized to reduce total cost per part while meeting the industry’s highest standards for quality, repeatability and sustainability.

Red Bull Powertrains materials engineer Rajan Singh Panesar and Christian Hertrich, powertrain chief engineer at Ford Racing, will reveal how Ford’s legendary manufacturing heritage and Red Bull’s F1 innovation are converging in the development of the 2026 power unit. In their presentation, Transforming and redefining the additive process at lightning speed with Red Bull Ford Powertrains, the pair will discuss how advanced additive manufacturing is helping the team meet the relentless demands of Formula 1, while potentially accelerating and streamlining passenger car development for the future.

PMW Magazine Awards

The PMW Magazine Awards celebrate technical and commercial achievements
across the motorsport and high-performance automotive supply chain. They are judged live at the show, with a panel of industry experts spanning various automotive engineering and motorsport disciplines, from former Le Mans-winning race-car designers to Formula 1 and rally engineers. The adjudication process is based on technical credibility rather than publicity.

Design of springs for race cars
