Organized by ASPIRE, the grand challenges arm of Abu Dhabi’s Advanced Technology Research Council, A2RL has evolved from a bold public testbed for AI under extreme race conditions into a competitive racing series.

Reigning A2RL champion TUM (Germany) will compete alongside Unimore Racing (Italy) and PoliMOVE (Italy) at the iconic racetrack in Imola, having qualified through their performances during the 2025 season. Two additional teams, Kinetiz (UAE) and Constructor Racing (Germany), will compete in qualification events ahead of race weekend for the remaining spots on the grid.

Faisal Al Bannai, secretary general of the Advanced Technology Research Council, said, “A2RL began in Abu Dhabi with a clear conviction: the future of mobility must be tested openly, rigorously and at the limits of performance. Its international debut at Imola demonstrates how the UAE is translating bold R&D ambition into globally relevant technology platforms that can accelerate progress in autonomous mobility.”

Stephane Timpano, CEO of ASPIRE, added, “Taking A2RL to Imola is a major milestone in our ambition to build the world’s first international championship for fully autonomous racecars. Few circuits carry the heritage and global standing of Imola, making it a powerful stage for our first international race. This is an important step for autonomous motorsport as both a technology platform and an emerging global sporting format.”

Building on two seasons in Abu Dhabi, A2RL has evolved from a world-first four-car autonomous race into a six-car Grand Final featuring wheel-to-wheel racing at speeds of more than 250km/h.

The league has also become a defining platform for human vs AI competition, with the performance gap between autonomous systems and professional drivers shrinking dramatically from 10 seconds in 2024 to just 1.58 seconds in 2025.

Alongside the on-track progress, A2RL has also built a growing global audience and strengthened Abu Dhabi’s position as a leading hub for autonomous mobility and AI innovation.

Imola

The Imola circuit is known for its elevation challenges, narrow racing lines with limited run-off areas and difficult overtaking zones. Its technical corners and narrow margins will test how autonomous systems manage grip, traffic, positioning and overtaking under constant pressure. For competing teams, the event represents a highly demanding competitive environment where performance will depend on the precision of software, sensor integration, engineering strategy and real-time autonomous decision-making.

Alessandro Tucci, executive director, house of grand challenges at ASPIRE, said, “Imola is the perfect testbed for the top A2RL teams to demonstrate their racing capabilities on an extremely challenging track. Imola does not allow for half-measures. It rewards precision, control and courage, which makes it the right circuit for autonomous racing to show what it can do under real pressure. Every car on track carries the work of engineers and coders pushing AI from simulation into real competition.”

From sim sprint to the circuit

Before testing on the Imola Circuit in August, teams will prepare through A2RL’s virtual racing ecosystem, with the Sim Sprint series running from May 19 to July 17 across high fidelity digital twins of Yas Marina, the A2RL Autodrome, Suzuka and Imola, before concluding on the Yas Marina North Circuit.

In the previous season, Sim Sprint delivered more than 5,000 hours of collective simulation testing and racing across 11 teams.

The platform provides teams with a controlled environment to develop and validate their algorithms ahead of real-world autonomous competition. Across the series, teams will face multi-car racing, overtakes, incident response scenarios and edge cases that are difficult to replicate safely on track. By giving teams more competitive mileage before Imola, Sim Sprint helps prepare AI systems for the speed, pressure and unpredictability of live autonomous racing.

Following Imola, A2RL will return to Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi for the final round of the 2026 season. The circuit has hosted A2RL since the series launched in 2024 and remains its primary venue as the championship continues to develop.

Garage Sport Labs will provide sales, service, technical support, race engineering, driver coaching, parts support and trackside assistance for Revolution Race Cars‘ line-up of prototypes, including its newly announced Revolution HyperSport and flagship Revolution 500 EVO models.

The Revolution HyperSport has been developed to create a new category of race car for both track day and competition use. The dealer has already taken customer deposits for early Revolution HyperSport build slots, with demonstration vehicles expected to arrive in Florida this autumn.

For customers competing in the Revolution Cup North America, the appointment adds another conveniently located service and support center capable of providing race engineering and parts supply throughout the state.

Nigel Redwood, managing director, Revolution Race Cars, said “As Revolution continues to expand, it is important that we provide customers with the highest levels of support both on and off the track. One of our great strengths today is our global dealer network, which allows us to deliver support wherever our customers choose to race. Garage Sport Labs brings a tremendous amount of experience in prototype racing and engineering support, making them an excellent addition to that network.

“The response since launching HyperSport has exceeded our expectations, generating interest from both customers and prospective dealers around the world. We are delighted to welcome Garage Sport Labs to the Revolution Race Cars family, and see considerable opportunities for further growth of this kind in the near future,” Redwood continued.

In addition to vehicle sales, Garage Sport Labs will maintain a dedicated inventory of Revolution parts and provide factory-authorized service and technical support for customers throughout Florida and the Southeastern United States.

Austin Webb, owner of Garage Sport Labs, commented, “The decision to partner with Revolution was driven by the quality of the product and the opportunity we see in the marketplace. The safety, reliability and engineering behind these cars are second to none. The HyperSport brings a level of technology that is rarely seen at its price point, and we believe it will be a compelling option for drivers looking to enter prototype racing or take the next step in their motorsport journey.

“We are committed to supporting our customers long after the sale. From parts inventory and technical support to race engineering and driver development, our goal is to provide a complete motorsport solution that allows our customers to focus on driving and competing,” Webb continued.

The shakedown runs at RAF Wittering in Cambridgeshire saw the 32ft-long vehicle driven by Wing Commander Andy Green OBE reach 208mph under its own hydrogen power – up from the 177mph recorded earlier in the program.

Alongside speed data, the team also gained engineering insight and refined coordination that JCB says can only be developed through on-track running. The crew also worked on the JCB Hydromax’s hydrogen refueling process, a key factor in ensuring fast turnaround on the Bonneville Salt Flats, where refueling speed can determine whether a record attempt proceeds. JCB says this experience will be valuable when the team returns to Utah next month.

JCB chairman Anthony Bamford said, “The UK testing program has given us everything we had hoped for and more. We have a car that runs, a crew that knows it inside out and a wealth of real-world data that no amount of theory could ever provide. The team has done a magnificent job and our focus now turns entirely to the Salt Flats and a new world hydrogen land speed record.”

JCB engineering director Ryan Ballard, who is leading the project, said, “Reaching 208mph is a tremendous result, but the real value of these tests is what we have learned. We now understand how the car behaves under load, we have refined our hydrogen refueling, and we have built the teamwork and communication that will be decisive at Bonneville. Every refuel, run and tire change we have rehearsed here is one we won’t be doing for the first time on the salt. We will arrive fully prepared, with a car and a crew that know exactly what they are doing.”

The car is powered by two of JCB’s own production-based hydrogen digger engines producing a combined 1,600bhp. With UK testing now complete, it will now be prepared for the journey to the USA. Lord Bamford has spearheaded the company’s £100m (US$132m) investment in hydrogen-powered internal combustion engines, which now power diggers rolling off production lines.

At Bonneville in 2006, Andy Green drove the JCB Dieselmax car to its Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) diesel world land speed record of 350.092mph, powered by two JCB engines. That record still stands, and JCB aims to beat it with the lighter, more powerful JCB Hydromax.

Andy Green said, “To run JCB Hydromax up to 208mph here in the UK is hugely encouraging. The car feels strong and the team has gelled brilliantly. Now comes the real challenge – Bonneville, the spiritual home of the world land speed record. I can’t wait to get out on the salt.”

In Utah, the team will compete at SpeedWeek, run by the Southern California Timing Association (SCTA), before pursuing an officially recognised record under the FIA.

AIW caught up with Carmine Landi, automotive customer project engineer at Bcomp, at Automotive Interiors Expo (June 23-25, 2026) to discuss the company’s approach to vehicle interiors and its ‘from race to road’ approach

How has the push for sustainability changed vehicle interior design?

The automotive sector’s transition to electric vehicles brings with it a shift in focus. For combustion cars, the engine was the primary focus for reducing fuel emissions, whereas with EVs, the powertrain offers fewer additional emissions-reduction levers, so the real opportunities lie now particularly in the materials and their impact across the full lifecycle of the vehicle.

Sustainable materials have different properties to traditional materials. How has Bcomp designed around that challenge?

We have designed and engineered our high-performance solutions to be fully compatible and integrated within existing and established manufacturing processes used across the automotive industry. Whether that’s back-injection molding (one of the most common process for interior trim parts), compression molding or resin transfer molding, our materials can be used as a plug-and-play (solution). Thus it’s the same process, with innovative high-performance sustainable materials. We also meet the industry standards, such as IATF 16949, which govern quality management in automotive manufacturing.

Motorsport technology filtering down to the consumer – tell us more.

This race-to-road strategy is one that we have been implementing for many years now.

In motorsport, the go-to-market timeline is much faster. There’s the opportunity to develop, innovate and then test within weeks, and the requirements are different too. Depending on the race series, a part might only need to survive one race before it’s replaced, rather than having to last 20 years on a road car, for example. This is what makes motorsport such a valuable testing ground enabling the technology transfer to road cars.

The collaboration with BMW is a perfect example of that race-to-road success. We started with them on a single part for their Formula E car, then moved into DTM, then into the GT4 car. And now, Bcomp’s high-performance natural fiber materials will be used extensively in BMW Group series production for exteriors and interiors. Most recently, BMW presented the M Concept Neue Klasse, featuring Bcomp materials on various exterior parts including the roof but as well interior components.

Electric vehicles are reshaping what interiors look like. Can you give us some examples?

Automotive interiors are becoming key differentiators for brands. Consumers are looking for an experience in the inside and this can be shaped by a combination of factors including materials choice. Examples of visible interior components for series cars featuring Bcomp’s materials are the Volvo EX30, the Polestar 5 and the Cupra Born VZ.

We’re also closely collaborating with major OEMs, including Kia, whose latest concept car features Bcomp’s materials, the Vision Meta Turismo released at the Milan Design Week 2026. The BMW M Concept Neue Klasse foreshadows what will be seen in the near future on BMW M series cars.

What has been the biggest challenge in convincing OEMs to replace traditional plastics?

One of the biggest challenge in adopting bio-based materials is people’s perception. The term “natural fiber” often brings to mind something soft or inconsistent but this is a misconception. Our materials are not raw fibers, they are highly engineered composites, where natural inputs such as flax are carefully processed to create parts with reliable mechanical properties.

In practical terms, this means these materials are designed to meet the same performance criteria as conventional alternatives like carbon fiber or plastics. Engineers often prefer to work with established materials, but they should be open to innovative materials such as AmpliTex and PowerRibs that have been thoroughly validated, tested and proven under high pressure and at scale.

Is there anything you would like to say to the industry?

At Bcomp, we help our customers decarbonize their supply chains with high-performance bio-based materials. We work closely with them through to successful launch, and when our support contributes to their success, it becomes a personal success for us too. Performance, function and aesthetics no longer have to be a trade-off, and we hope more OEMs take this into consideration, especially in an increasingly crowded EV market.

This close collaboration between BMW Group and Bcomp marks the successful industrialization of natural-fiber composites for exterior aesthetic applications in high-performance production cars.

The BMW M Concept Neue Klasse made its debut in early June the Le Mans 24 Hours. The materials partnership between Bcomp and BMW M was first announced last year.

The visible fiber composite roof of the BMW M Concept Neue Klasse showcases the bespoke weave and color developed specifically for and together with BMW M. For the exterior, BMW M used AmpliTex for the roof, front splitter, hood air outlet, side skirts, mirror caps and the rear diffuser. On the interior, AmpliTex was used for the back of the four newly developed bucket seats as a structural element. Bcomp’s natural fiber is not only used in its pure form, but also, for the first time, in a refined form with M branding in the roof graphic.

From the track to the road

Offering a high stiffness to weight ratio, safer crash behavior than carbon fiber, exceptional vibration damping and full radio transparency, AmpliTex has been used extensively in motorsport. This includes applications in Formula 1, Formula E, Super Formula, GT racing, motorcycle racing and rally.

Unlike many conventional performance automotive composites, AmpliTex, designed and engineered in Switzerland, is woven from flax fibers. This is a renewable base material that does not compete with food crops. Compared to carbon fiber, it reduces cradle-to-gate CO2 emissions by up to 85%.

Once parts have reached the end of their service life, they can also be disposed via standard waste-to-energy power plants, using an environmentally friendly process to capture energy that can be repurposed, further reducing the net impact on the environment.

Christian Fischer, CEO at Bcomp, said, “Natural fibers do not pretend to copy carbon fiber composites; they are distinctive and unique. Supplying our AmpliTex reinforcement materials for the BMW M Concept Neue Klasse is proof that we have challenged the status quo and conclusively demonstrated the viability of our sustainable composite technologies in both structural and aesthetic high-performance automotive applications. We eagerly anticipate seeing future road-going vehicles featuring our natural fiber composite solutions.”

Zahra Awan spoke with Bcomp’s automotive customer project engineer Carmine Landi about the BMW M collaboration specifically, as well as the company’s approach to vehicle interiors and its ‘from race to road’ motto, at Automotive Interiors Expo Europe 2026. Read the interview here.

With high temperatures experienced and a heatwave affecting much of Europe, Pirelli said the softer compounds would deliver greater grip levels to compensate for reduced asphalt performance in the heat. It anticipated ahead of the weekend that the rear soft tires – the SC0 for Moto2 and SC1 for Moto3 – would be the preferred choice across the weekend, including in the races themselves.

The front tire at Assen faces fewer demands than the rear, but stability and precision are important given the circuit’s fast corners and frequent changes of direction. Pirelli said that both front options, the soft SC1 and medium SC2, were reliable options, when taking into account a rider’s style and bike characteristics.

The TT Circuit Assen, known as the Cathedral of Speed, is characterized by a sequence of fast corners demanding high average speeds and smooth riding, rather than outright top speed. For tires, the layout generates continuous lateral loads and significant thermal stress, while the asphalt’s low abrasiveness means structural fatigue is a greater concern than surface wear. The lack of heavy braking zones also makes tire warm-up more difficult, a challenge compounded by often changeable weather. The overall demand is for stability, consistent performance and directional precision throughout the lap.

“The Assen circuit represents a unique test bench on the calendar due to its extremely flowing layout, which requires riders to maintain a high and consistent pace throughout the lap,” said Giorgio Barbier, motorcycle racing director, Pirelli.

“The particular configuration of the track mainly rewards cornering precision and the ability to manage load transfers progressively, aspects that highlight the correct balance of the bike and the overall effectiveness of the tire package. In this context, it becomes essential to guarantee predictable and uniform behavior, capable of supporting the rider through rapid changes of direction and high-speed cornering phases.

“Considering the high temperatures expected, the rear soft solutions, SC0 in Moto2 and SC1 in Moto3, represent a particularly effective option thanks to the higher level of grip they offer. The front, although not presenting any marked critical issues, plays a fundamental role in terms of stability, precision and consistent performance, all indispensable elements on such a fast track. For this reason, both available solutions, soft SC1 and medium SC2, can represent valid alternatives depending on riding style and the characteristics of each bike.”

Santo Ficili, Alfa Romeo CEO and Maserati COO, explained, “For over 112 years, we have interpreted contemporary luxury in a distinctive way and aim to grow further in this segment, expanding our product offering and investing in the technologies that best express its character: from the development of iconic powertrains such as the V6 Nettuno to the evolution of the performance of the Folgore range, with a technological strategy aligned with the expectations of our customers.”

The GranTurismo and GranCabrio

The latest GranTurismo coupe and GranCabrio convertible feature a new calibration of the engine and transmission, making the car more responsive and rewarding, while the acoustic character has been refined with an iconic and engaging exhaust sound.

Described as “heirs to the captivating Maserati GranTurismo of the past”, which was launched in 2007 and renewed in 2022 and 2023 respectively, the GranTurismo and GranCabrio are now presented with refinements spanning design and driving dynamics.

Both models are available in three versions. Two ICE options are the entry-level 483hp version, which interprets “the luxury of travel” and the 582hp Trofeo, which is said to heighten sporting character.

The GranTurismo and GranCabrio Trofeo represent the most powerful expression of the range. At their heart is the V6 Nettuno, with motorsport-derived pre-chamber combustion technology, now raised to 582hp (40hp more than the previous generation). Both models feature a 3.0-liter twin-turbo engine that shares with the MCPURA the patented Formula 1-derived MTC technology, with cylinder deactivation for efficiency and a front differential aligned with the engine to lower the center of gravity.

The combustion-engine models offer three drive modes: GT, Sport and Country on the 482hp version, with Corsa mode reserved for the Trofeo. Country mode, also available on the EV Folgore, raises the ride height by 20mm. Sport mode enhances exhaust sound and suspension response, and is also available on the Trofeo.

The Folgore, with 751hp and torque vectoring, brings the family into the electric era. The BEV’s 800V system uses three motors, one at the front and two decoupled motors at the rear, for more than 1,200 hp installed and 760 hp continuously delivered to the wheels. The two rear motors enable surgically precise torque vectoring, while the 92.5kWh battery adopts a T-bone geometry that keeps the height at just 1,353mm, the lowest among electric cars. AWD Disconnect is standard, transferring drive to the rear axle in 500 milliseconds through the physical disengagement of the front half-shafts. A new energy management algorithm brings the GranTurismo Folgore range to more than 540km.

The Grecale

Maserati’s luxury D-SUV, the Grecale, combines spaciousness, sporty performance and everyday practicality. Its cabin features premium materials and high levels of comfort, while selectable drive modes adapt the driving experience to different conditions and preferences. At the top of the range, a V6 twin-turbo engine delivers class-leading specific output, which is also complemented by a distinctive exhaust note and Formula 1-inspired technology.

Revived in 2022, the XCR Sprint Cup is a cross-country rally championship for off-road vehicles. Previously held only in Hokkaido, the series expanded to Honshu in 2026 following growing participation and national interest.

In the race, adaptability to the varied surfaces, especially on narrow forest roads, is crucial. In addition to the unique friction changes of rough unpaved roads, precise line setting and stable traction performance on narrow, technical sections will determine the outcome. Therefore, tires require high handling stability, durability and driving force.

XC-2S class winner, Wisteria, with Toyo Tires. Hideyuki Fujino & Shina Tamaki

After winning the XC-3 class championship in 2025, Wisteria with Toyo Tires moved up to the XC-2S class in 2026 with a new Subaru Forester. The team won its class in the third round, extending its winning streak to three consecutive races.

In the XC-3 class, the Highbridge First with Toyo Tires achieved a one-two finish, taking first and second place.

XC-2S class winning driver Hideyuki Fujino said, “Thanks to the cooperation of Toyo Tires and everyone involved, we were able to successfully compete in the XC-2S class with the new Forester. Despite the heavy rain, Open Country performed well and was able to finish and win, which makes us very happy.

Co-driver Shina Tamaki added, “Since the new vehicle behaves differently from before, I was worried about navigation. Although it was a grueling race with many cars retired, Open Country was stable in both durability and grip, and I truly feel it led to the finish.”

The Open Country series is Toyo Tire’s flagship SUV tire range. Developed and proven in international motorsport, the tires are designed for high durability, cut and chip resistance and strong all-terrain performance. The series is also recognized for its aggressive tread design, with select models in Japan featuring white-letter sidewalls that highlight the product and brand names.

The concept was unveiled by Genesis Magma Racing team principal Cyril Abiteboul and Genesis chief creative officer Luc Donckerwolke at the Le Mans 24 Hours earlier this month, where GMR made its debut.

Abiteboul said, “The Genesis Magma GT3 Concept is one potential future direction for Genesis Magma Racing, alongside our FIA WEC Hypercar entry, as we grow to support the entire Genesis brand.

“Since the very start, we have stated that Genesis Magma Racing is a long-term project, and here we have one possible direction we can take. Like Hypercar, GT3 is another of the recent success stories in motorsport.

“Having Genesis and Genesis Magma Racing represented there would closely link the road-going and racing sides of the brand and add further to our profile in world motorsport.”

The Genesis Magma GT3 Concept has been developed in alignment with GT3 technical regulations. Conceived as an independent study, it explores how race-driven architecture, aerodynamics and engineering principles could inform future Genesis performance vehicles, rather than being derived from an existing road-going model.

More than one potential

At the press conference at the Circuit de la Sarthe, Genesis also presented an updated Magma GT Concept – first revealed in November alongside the GV60 Magma – with a redesigned interior. The GT Concept illustrated “a parallel exploration of how race-inspired thinking could translate into a refined road-going grand tourer” the auto maker said, adding that ” the two concepts highlight one potential pathway for connecting Genesis’ motorsport ambitions with its evolving performance portfolio, without confirming specific production or racing plans.”

“The Magma GT Concept and Magma GT3 Concept represent two distinct yet connected expressions of Genesis performance,” Donckerwolke said. “The Magma GT Concept embodies our vision of luxury and athleticism on the road, while the Magma GT3 Concept translates that philosophy into the race environment, where every element is driven by performance, efficiency and purpose. Together, they demonstrate how Genesis is exploring the full spectrum of high performance – from refined grand touring to uncompromising motorsport.”

Continued expansion

After announcing last year its expansion into new markets in Italy, France, the Netherlands and Spain, the manufacturer is now preparing for further entry into Poland, Bulgaria, Austria, Portugal and Denmark as part of its European growth strategy.

Genesis also noted how its presence at the Le Mans 24 Hours has also expanded – one year after the first European presentation of the GMR-001 Hypercar design as a show car, it had returned to the Le Mans 24 Hours as a fully operational Hypercar team.

The company also showcased two evolved X Gran Convertible Concept models – originally introduced at the 2025 Seoul Mobility Show – during the Drivers’ Parade in Le Mans city center on June 13. Building on the earlier concept, these latest iterations represent “refined and more visually striking evolution” that further align the model with the the Magma portfolio.
