The 2026 Formula 1 regulation changes usher in a new era of racing with increased electrification, efficiency and sustainability, representing one of the most significant technical evolutions in modern Formula 1 history. As the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team prepares for this transformation, it is partnering with Microsoft to harness the power of its cloud and enterprise artificial intelligence (AI) technologies across the business, from the factory to the racetrack.

“Our sport is driven by those who lead through innovation,” said Toto Wolff, CEO and team principal, Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team. “We are delighted to partner with Microsoft, one of the world’s foremost technology leaders, whose name is synonymous with groundbreaking innovation. This partnership also reflects our commitment to staying at the forefront of performance and progress. By putting Microsoft’s technology at the center of how we operate as a team, we will create faster insights, smarter collaboration and new ways of working as we look ahead to the next generation in F1.”

In a sport defined by split-second margins and data-driven decisions, Formula 1 places extreme demands on enterprise systems, including high data volumes, real-time analysis and global operations. Through their partnership, Microsoft and the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team seek to demonstrate how enterprise technology can support performance at the highest level of competition.

“This partnership puts Microsoft’s cloud and enterprise AI technologies at the heart of racing performance, where milliseconds matter and data determines outcomes,” said Judson Althoff, CEO, Microsoft commercial business. “Together with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team, we are harnessing data and turning it into real-time intelligence that powers faster decisions, smarter strategies and sustained competitive advantage – both on and off the track.”

Data collection

Each Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team car carries more than 400 sensors, generating over 1.1 million data points per second – from tire degradation and aerodynamic behavior to energy recovery system deployment and evolving track conditions.

Microsoft Azure and its AI capabilities will expand the team’s existing high-performance computing and data capabilities, both the factory and trackside, with scalable cloud and AI resources supporting simulation workloads, performance analysis, race strategy modeling and cross-team analytics.

Microsoft 365 and GitHub integration

Microsoft 365 and GitHub already support the team with key workflows across its sites and trackside, with expanded use of Microsoft 365 planned to further improve efficiency and innovation. Microsoft’s GitHub tools support faster engineering innovation and performance optimization, with the team set to deepen GitHub integration to streamline and accelerate development workflows.

Real-time testing and scaling

“It is a privilege to welcome Microsoft into the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team partner ecosystem,” said Richard Sanders, chief commercial officer, Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team. “Microsoft’s technology already plays a central role in how we operate as a business, and this partnership opens new opportunities to innovate as we look toward the next era of technological development. I look forward to seeing how our teams collaborate to unlock new ways of working across the organization.”

Using Microsoft Azure, the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team leveraged real-time sensor data and cloud tools to pilot intelligent virtual sensors, enabling faster testing without new on-premises infrastructure. Using Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS), the team scaled computing power up or down as needed, achieving technological advances while meeting financial and regulatory requirements.

At the core of the system is a modular rotor unit that mounts directly onto the driveshaft. Depending on the application requirements, the sensor can transmit measurement data either through a 2.4GHz radio telemetry link or via an inductive near-field interface. The radio variant provides a proprietary, interference-resistant wireless signal through FCC correlations with sampling rates of up to 10kHz and a transmission range of up to 10m, making it ideal for on-road applications. For long-duration or high-dynamics applications – especially on engine, e-motor or driveline test benches – the inductive version supplies continuous power across a typical rotor-stator distance of around 10mm. This enables uninterrupted data acquisition even under demanding thermal and mechanical boundary conditions.

The ME-DST’s electronics work across extended temperature ranges and are housed in sealed enclosures rated up to IP65/67. The rotor module can be customized for different shaft diameters and shapes, making it possible to fit the system into tight or unconventional spaces. Inside, the measurement electronics process strain-gauge signals with high stability, ensuring accurate torque readings even during rapid load changes or dynamic torsional oscillations.

To facilitate seamless integration into existing measurement infrastructures, the ME-DST receiver has analog and digital output interfaces. The analog output can be configured to deliver common current ranges such as 4-20mA, enabling direct connection to conventional data acquisition systems without the need for external converters. For more advanced applications, the system provides a fully configurable CAN interface in which message identifier, bitrate and transmission frequency can be adjusted to match the vehicle or test bench architecture. The torque value is transmitted as a high-resolution, processed signal, ensuring compatibility with modern control systems and data loggers.

A central component of the ME-DST’s user experience is its integrated web-based configuration interface. Once powered, the receiver creates a dedicated wi-fi network through which engineers can connect using any browser-enabled device. The interface provides a clear dashboard with live torque data, system health indicators, temperature information and, when applicable, inductive power levels. In the Live Data view, measurement curves can be monitored in real time with an auto-scrolling chart that supports pausing and data clearing for quick analysis during setup. The configuration menu facilitates rapid adjustment of output parameters, sampling rates and communication settings, while a simple tare function enables immediate zeroing of the sensor after installation. This modern UX-oriented design significantly reduces setup times and eliminates the need for proprietary software tools.

According to Melectric Systems, the ME-DST is suitable for a range of applications. In electric powertrain development, it enables precise mapping of motor torque, load cycles and efficiency under real operating conditions. In hybrid powertrains, detailed measurements during transient load changes, clutch engagements and regenerative braking events are beneficial. The system is also well suited to transmission testing, where its stable high-speed sampling can be used to analyze torsional vibrations, gear efficiency and lubrication performance. In motorsport and high-performance vehicles, the ME-DST’s low mass, compact size and robust telemetry make it ideal for real-time driveline analysis. For durability and endurance testing, the inductive version provides continuous operation without maintenance interruptions.

The collaboration focuses on leveraging cutting-edge measurement technology to enhance vehicle component precision and significantly speed up production processes.

Central to this partnership is the implementation of Eleven Dynamics’ EDAS platform (Eleven Dynamics Automation Suite), designed for automating inspection and measurement tasks in demanding, high-performance environments. By integrating robot-assisted measurement directly into production, Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber replaces traditional manual inspections and complex measurement procedures with rapid, accurate and real-time analyses.

Carbon components, renowned for their intricate designs and tight tolerances, can be automatically verified up to a micrometer. Additionally, aerodynamic parts such as front wings and underfloors will undergo in-line, non-destructive evaluation, ensuring continuous and immediate availability of measurement data to engineering teams, to “empower faster, more informed decisions on vehicle setup and development”, according to Sauber.

Through this partnership, Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber will improve efficiency, shorten decision-making timelines and collect more accurate data, contributing to enhanced on-track performance, the team says. At the same time, Eleven Dynamics will gain practical insights from deploying its technologies in the high-performance environment of Formula 1, supporting the continued development and refinement of its solutions for wider industrial use.

Stefano Battiston, chief commercial officer, Stake F1 Team KICK Sauber, said, “Our partnership with Eleven Dynamics helps Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber make another step in the direction of efficiency, precision and, ultimately, performance. Together, we chase every micrometer: Formula 1 is a sport of marginal gains and incremental development, and Eleven Dynamics allows us to automatize and speed up crucial production processes, giving us time to focus on what matters most: on-track performance.”

Michael Fischer, COO of Eleven Dynamics, commented, “Innovation in robotics brings speed to the track — and that is precisely our common goal. High-downforce cars, such as those from the Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber, are ideal for high-precision measurement technology. Together, we’re elevating quality control to a new level.”

Santiago Droll, CEO of Eleven Dynamics, added, “This partnership demonstrates how modern industrial technology directly enhances motorsport performance, and how engineering innovation can become a genuine competitive advantage.”

Each component has been selected with input from professional FIA series drivers.

Alireza Tashakori, manager of e-mobility business development and application at MoTeC, commented, “We’ve had this idea for a long time. When the opportunity came up with a pilot client, we decided that if we wanted to do this, we would do it as a product off the shelf. So, we seized the opportunity and then worked with some collaborators to make it happen.”

The racing steering wheel is fully FIA marshaling controlled, meaning it is integrated with the FIA’s marshaling system, which allows automated, real-time communication between race control and the driver through the steering wheel’s display or lights.

Tashakori added, “We can split the CAN into private CAM and public CAN. And we offer all the standard logging features that motorsports teams typically require, including secure logging capabilities. This is handled through our KeePass function, which is an encrypted, cloud-based data storage system.”

He continued, “We added the capability to display text to the driver via an external controller, so you can send the CAN command and then you message the driver, in addition to marshaling messages.”

The racing steering wheel is due to be FIA crash tested by the end of the year.

At the center of the collaboration will be Hexagon’s advanced metrology solutions, including its patented Marvelscan scanning device, which will enable the team to generate highly accurate 3D scans of vehicles before each race, ensuring they are consistently in compliance.

Marvelscan will be used alongside other metrology technologies, including the Hexagon Absolute Arm, a portable coordinate measurement machine (PCMM) known for its accuracy and compliance with recognized ISO standards. According to Hexagon, its devices and technologies are designed to work within a single ecosystem, helping to eliminate silos and make data sharing easier. This should enable JDC-Miller MotorSports to expand and adopt additional technology as its challenges and priorities evolve.

“We at JDC-Miller MotorSports are excited about the many ways we can utilize Hexagon’s technology,” said John Church, managing partner, No. 85 JDC-Miller MotorSports Porsche 963. “In the IMSA WeatherTech Championship series, it is essential for our car to be in compliance at all times. Utilizing the Hexagon tools allows us to arrive at the track and breeze through technical inspection. The Porsche 963 is a precision instrument, just like the advanced equipment Hexagon produces – it only makes sense to use the best. We believe Hexagon is a natural partner in the high-tech environment of the GTP class within the IMSA WeatherTech Championship.”

“With Siemens, we’ve got the digital backbone that lets us turn ideas into reality faster than ever. Their tools give our engineers the freedom to innovate, adapt and stay agile, which in Formula 1 can be the difference between winning and losing. It’s a partnership that continues to push us to new heights every season,” said Christian Horner, CEO and team principal, Oracle Red Bull Racing.

Since 2004, Oracle Red Bull Racing has built its engineering infrastructure on the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio of industry software. The team has effectively managed logistical challenges, increased design complexity and the met the need for growing number of parts and engineering changes per year, as well as improved manufacturing repeatability.

Siemens Xcelerator has enabled the team to transform its processes from adopting the latest engineering technology that supports rapid part design, to composite part development and wire harness engineering. The team is continuously designing and manufacturing both at its technical center and at trackside between races. Siemens says the Xcelerator helps the team in engineering, manufacturing and continuing success on the track.

“Working with Red Bull Racing from day one has been an incredible journey, both personally and professionally. I started as an engineer at Siemens, supporting their vision, and 20 years later, I’m proud to see how our collaboration has helped drive their success,” said Ben Sheath, vice president and managing director, UK & Ireland, Siemens Digital Industries Software.
