Using Conflux’s configurable core platform, the transmission cooler was adapted to the program’s specific boundary conditions and produced in just two weeks using metal additive manufacturing.

Multimatic Motorsports selected and integrated the unit for an endurance application, without the cost and delay of a clean-sheet design. The Conflux oil cooler used engine coolant to manage gearbox oil temperatures within a shared water circuit. In this endurance application, it delivered approximately 20% higher heat rejection than the incumbent solution within the same packaging envelope, providing additional thermal headroom without extra space, weight or aero penalty.

“Endurance racing is the ultimate test for any cooling system,” said Glenn Rees, principal engineer at Conflux Technology. “We’ve shown that our configurable, 3D-printed technology can move from design to race car in weeks, deliver significantly improved performance, and still be trusted to reach the finish line in some of the world’s toughest races.”

The 3D-printed core incorporates highly optimized internal channels to increase heat transfer while controlling pressure drop within a compact, lightweight envelope. Conflux’s configurable design platform enables engineers to rapidly tune geometry for different gearboxes, layouts and duty cycles, reducing non-recurring engineering costs and shortening program time-to-track, without compromising durability or consistency over long stints.

“At Multimatic, we look for partners who can combine innovation with robust delivery,” added Julian Sole, design manager at Multimatic Motorsports. “The Conflux oil cooler, built from their configurable design and packaged efficiently in a very tight space, delivered the reliability we required over a full endurance race distance.”

The same configurable oil cooler architecture is available to other OEMs and race operations seeking a step change in thermal capacity and packaging without a complete cooling-system redesign.

McLaren turned to Greene Tweed for an advanced sealing solution for the hydraulic actuator that clamps the friction clutch inside the differential. This system optimizes torque distribution for maximum traction and cornering speed. Seal integrity is paramount, as leakage could cause a catastrophic loss of system function and force the car to be retired.

“This project was a true example of collaborative engineering at its best,” said Matthew James, director of engineering and product design at Greene Tweed. “Our teams worked side by side to validate seal behavior under real operating conditions, refining the design through testing and iteration. The result is a robust, leak-free sealing solution that supports McLaren’s pursuit of marginal gains while meeting the long-term demands of Formula 1 racing.”

Greene Tweed developed two MSE seal assemblies featuring a unique C-shaped profile and a corrosion-resistant metal spring to provide uniform sealing force. Designed to operate under the application’s extreme conditions – including temperatures up to 150°C, pressures from 5 to 250 bar and exposure to aggressive fluids – the seals use Greene Tweed’s proprietary Avalon 44 (PTFE). This material ensures superior wear resistance, high strength and low friction.

“Given Greene Tweed’s longstanding reputation for excellent quality, choosing them was an obvious choice for us,” said James Manning, head of transmission at McLaren Mastercard Formula 1 Team. “The MSE Seal has consistently demonstrated its durability and reliability within our system. We’re confident this is only the beginning of a long-term collaboration to drive even greater performance in future seasons.”

Following testing on a dynamic transmission test rig, Greene Tweed and McLaren engineers have successfully qualified the next-generation MSE sealing system for the 2026 season. This more robust version, reinforced with backup ring support and a 301SS finger spring, has enabled McLaren to develop a more compact version of its system for future performance gains.

From the earliest concept stage, development followed a one-team approach led by Toyota Motor Company (TMC) chairman Akio Toyoda. Professional drivers Tatsuya Kataoka, Hiroaki Ishiura and Naoya Gamou, along with gentleman driver Daisuke Toyoda and in-house evaluation drivers, worked closely alongside engineers throughout the process.

The cars are positioned as modern flagships built on the legacy of the Toyota 2000GT and Lexus LFA. One of the aims of their development is to preserve and pass on Toyota’s principles of car making to the next generation of engineers. The project brought together LFA development veterans and younger engineers, introduced Toyota-first technologies to boost performance, and embraced a range of unprecedented engineering challenges.

Three key elements of the GR GT

The GR GT was conceived as a road-legal race car, designed with a driver-first philosophy to deliver exceptional performance and a strong sense of car-driver unity. It features a hybrid powertrain combining a newly developed 4.0-liter V8 twin-turbo engine with a single electric motor, targeting over 650PS and 850Nm of torque.

Development focused on three key elements: a low center of gravity, lightweight yet rigid construction and optimized aerodynamics.

Development of the GR GT focused on achieving an exceptionally low center of gravity by lowering both the overall vehicle height and the driver’s seating position. A front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout was chosen for precise handling. Heavy components, including the 4.0-liter V8 twin-turbo engine with dry-sump lubrication and rear-mounted transaxle, were optimally positioned to lower the vehicle’s center of gravity. The driver’s position was tuned so that the driver’s and car’s centers of gravity align, reportedly enhancing unity and handling.

The GR GT features Toyota’s first all-aluminum body frame. Additionally, the company says that appropriate use of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP), plastic and other materials in the body panels has resulted in a strong yet light body.

In pursuit of aerodynamic performance, exterior styling involved a process that was new to Toyota. Although the company usually turns its attention to aerodynamics only after the exterior styling is finalized, the ideal aerodynamic performance of the GR GT was established first, followed by consideration of exterior styling. Aerodynamics engineers and exterior designers worked together to achieve styling that pursues aerodynamic and cooling performance.

Developing the GT and FIA GT3-spec race car

The GR GT3 also features a low center of gravity, low weight with high rigidity and excellent aerodynamic performance. It also meets the specifications of the Federation Internationale d’Automobile (FIA) GT3, which is the top category of production-vehicle-based customer motorsports.

In developing the GR GT and GR GT3, TGR used a range of methodologies informed by its motorsports experience, including vehicle research and development using a driving simulator. By introducing a simulator early in the process, engineers were able to efficiently refine the fundamental characteristics of the cars from the outset.

Alongside simulator-based development, extensive real-world testing was carried out not only on proving grounds such as Toyota Technical Center Shimoyama but also at circuits around the world, including Fuji Speedway and the Nürburgring. These tests allowed TGR to verify high-limit performance and long-term durability. GR GT testing was also conducted on public roads to ensure the vehicle delivers exhilaration, intuitive handling and confidence in everyday driving.

Four-liter, V8 twin-turbo engine + rear transaxle

The GR GT’s 4-liter, V8 twin-turbo engine, which is TMC’s first to be fitted in a production vehicle, is based on a thoroughly compact and light design concept. With a bore and stroke of 87.5 x 83.1, the engine’s short stroke reduces overall engine height, while its hot-V configuration positions one turbo in each engine bank. The engine also features dry-sump lubrication and an oil pan that is thinner than usual.

The engine’s power is transmitted to the rear transaxle via a CFRP torque tube. In addition to a motor-generator, the transaxle integrates a newly developed 8-speed automatic transmission, which uses a wet-start clutch in place of a torque converter, and a mechanical limited-slip differential.

The development targets call for a maximum system output of at least 650PS and a maximum system torque of at least 850Nm. In addition, using a rear transaxle and strategically positioning the drive battery, fuel tank and other heavy components has achieved a 45:55 front-to-rear weight distribution, enhancing the vehicle’s handling stability and responsiveness.

Development of the powertrain involved advancing studies through the use of race development driving simulators and system benches onto which entire powertrain systems could be mounted. Consideration was also given to thermal management, mounting position and serviceability.

This update to the Mercedes-AMG GT2, first seen in late 2022, combines characteristics of the original base model with technical and stylistic references to the current Mercedes-AMG F1 W16 E Performance, the auto maker says. Kimi Antonelli, current driver of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team, is the patron of the GT2 Edition W16, which is limited to 30 units.

Push2Pass function

The Mercedes-AMG GT2 Edition W16 is not homologated, meaning it does not have to meet any racing series requirements or restrictions. Equipped with the 4l V8 biturbo from the original GT2 (707hp/520kW), the eight-cylinder engine has been optimized with new turbochargers and modified engine electronics. The result is a maximum output of 830hp (610kW).

The GT2 Edition W16 reaches its peak performance when the Push2Pass function is activated. When the driver presses the corresponding button on the multifunction steering wheel, the system temporarily increases the boost pressure. This provides an additional 100hp (73kW) and 200Nm of torque. The maximum torque thus rises to 1,000Nm and the maximum output of 830hp is achieved.

In terms of power-to-weight ratio, the special edition model boasts a figure of around 1.7kg/hp. The vehicle has a weight of just 1,430kg. The new magnesium rims, which feature color accents that “create a visual link to the Formula 1 car”, also contribute to the weight optimization.

Transmission technology

The GT2 Edition W16 power is transmitted via a sequential 6-speed racing transmission with modified gear ratios. The transmission is mounted on the rear axle in a transaxle configuration and connected to the engine via a carbon-fiber torque tube for torsional rigidity and high torque transmission. The suspension features fully adjustable four-way motorsport shock absorbers and the stabilizers on the front and rear axles can be adjusted in four stages to suit the respective requirements.

Aerodynamic package with DRS

To achieve optimum vehicle balance, Mercedes-AMG has further refined the aerodynamic concept and fine-tuned it in numerous test drives on a range of Formula 1 circuits. The result is several new components including active louvres above the front wheels, an enlarged front diffuser, aerodynamically optimized exterior mirrors and a carbon spoiler lip integrated into the trunk lid. Like the Formula 1 car, the GT2 Edition W16 also features a drag reduction system (DRS), enabling the top speed to increase to over 320km/h.

“Formula 1 and GT Racing are the central pillars of Mercedes-AMG Motorsport. The Mercedes-AMG GT2 Edition W16 unites both worlds in one product. The limited edition model is our most powerful customer racing car to date and a spectacular race and track day vehicle in every respect. It combines fundamental characteristics of the Mercedes-AMG GT2 with stylistic and technical references from the Mercedes-AMG F1 W16 E Performance. With the exclusive handover event, we are creating an unforgettable experience,” said Christoph Sagemüller, head of Mercedes-AMG Motorsport.

Safety

The GT2 Edition W16 features a carbon fiber safety cell connected to the chassis, a five-point harness, safety nets, a fire extinguishing system, a safety tank and an emergency hatch. Other safety features include an effective racing ABS and a multi-adjustable traction control.

“I had the opportunity to test drive the Mercedes-AMG GT2 Edition W16 and had so much fun that I would have loved to spend more time on the track. The Push2Pass function is a truly sensational feature. The edition model is not only fast, but also safe. This immediately inspires confidence. I am very proud to be part of this project and to have my signature immortalized in every Mercedes-AMG GT2 Edition W16,” said Kimi Antonelli, Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team.

Conflux has achieved a 30% increase in heat rejection compared to the previous solution, enabling optimal thermal performance even under the most demanding conditions.

The Pagani Utopia is powered by the Pagani V12, a bespoke 6-liter twin-turbo engine by Mercedes-AMG. It pairs with a custom Xtrac seven-speed transmission, which is available in either automated or manual form. This powertrain combination provides “unparalleled control and responsiveness while meeting the stringent emissions standards globally:, the companies said.

The extreme power and flexibility of the Utopia demanded advanced thermal management solutions, particularly for its transmission oil domain. To meet this challenge, Pagani developed a custom heat exchanger with Conflux Technology, a heat transfer and additive manufacturing (AM) company, that leveraged cutting-edge additive manufacturing technology.

“It’s an incredible privilege to contribute to the creation of groundbreaking vehicles for industry leaders like Pagani,” said Michael Fuller, founder and CEO of Conflux Technology. “Our advanced heat exchangers are designed to enable new levels of effectiveness, perfectly complementing the engineering craftsmanship that Pagani is celebrated for. This collaboration showcases the synergy of precision, innovation and excellence.”

The Utopia’s transmission underwent rigorous testing, from track and road validation to thermal shock trials, proving its resilience and capability to support the hypercar’s unparalleled performance.

“The innovation of Conflux’s technology has allowed Xtrac to continue to push the boundaries of transmission performance, while maintaining the lightweight, motorsport-derived ethos of our transmission solutions,” added Oliver Nixon, head of high performance automotive at Xtrac.

“Conflux’s advanced heat transfer technology empowers the Pagani Utopia to achieve superior heat rejection, ensuring optimal thermal balance, even in severe driving conditions,” commented Francesco Perini, head of the technical department at Pagani.

“In our relentless pursuit of perfection, every detail matters. Conflux’s cartridge heat exchangers are a testament to precision and innovation, playing a vital role in ensuring that the Utopia can be enjoyed for a romantic drive on the French Riviera as well as on the most demanding tracks.”

The early work on this engine was detailed in Automotive Powertrain Technology back in September 2023.

They understand exactly what it takes to deliver engineering precision and driver engagement,” explained Zenvo CTO Jon Gunner. “The Aurora program gains momentum each week, and is now entering a critical phase. Bringing Ricardo on board as a technical partner is a major milestone as we continue to push the envelope of performance. From here, we will continue to challenge convention as the development program gears up, ahead of first engine fire up.”

Details of the transmission are still to be announced but Zenvo has confirmed that it will be a 7-speed, hybridized unit.

“We are delighted to have been named as transmission partner for the Zenvo Aurora program,” added Richard Guest, MD of Ricardo Performance Products. “Like Zenvo Automotive, Ricardo takes a no compromise approach to delivering performance for our clients and so we are thrilled to be able to bring Ricardo’s extensive experience in transmission and driveline innovation to this program. We look forward to supporting in the development of Zenvo’s lightest and most powerful road car yet.”

The new range will be showcased at Professional MotorSport World Expo, November 13 & 14, 2024.

The modular range has been engineered to provide clients with a cost-effective solution to the development of bespoke drivelines for advanced propulsion systems. First to be released in the range is a family of epicyclic reduction drives for electric, hybrid and hydrogen fuel cell platforms.

Customers can select from a menu of base solutions available for rapid prototyping, or choose from the numerous pre-engineered torque outputs and gear ratio options to customize their selection to their requirements.

Ricardo’s Element range has been engineered for sectors with high-performance areas, such as motorsport, performance automotive, defense, off-highway, marine and industrial.

Steve Blevins, head of engineering for Ricardo’s Performance Products business unit, said, “Ricardo is well known for highly bespoke gearboxes for premium motorsport and performance automotive, but as product development cycles shorten and budgets are squeezed there is an increasing demand for cost-effective solutions without compromising on the quality and performance that a tailored solution brings to a program. Element offers just that.”

“We’re delighted to receive this certification. It’s a big step forward for us and a significant achievement for a Tier 1 motorsport supplier,” said Xtrac’s chief executive, Adrian Moore.

The FIA environmental accreditation program is dedicated to helping motorsport and mobility stakeholders to measure and enhance their environmental performance. The program audit assesses practices in environmental management, including energy use, water consumption, waste management, ground and water pollution, materials design and procurement, transportation, biodiversity and heritage, noise pollution, air quality, and monitoring of carbon emissions.

Based on an evaluation, the FIA sustainability auditors discussed potential areas for improvement with Xtrac. Once this work was finished, using the FIA’s comprehensive self-assessment tool, Xtrac applied for an audit. It received confirmation of its two-star accreditation, a certificate and an audit report with additional recommendations. The certification is valid for two years.

“We aim to continue improving our environmental performance during this period. It was a massive team effort and very worthwhile. We want to thank Cristiana Pace, Bridget Haywood and Adam Ellis at Enovation Consulting for their expertise in helping us achieve this milestone and all of the hard-working and skilled staff at Xtrac who made this possible” said Xtrac’s people and culture director, Kirsty Knight.
