Through strong knowledge of the Rail and Transport environment, customers and competitors, the Transport Business Line team captures market requirements and defines opportunity for this market, creating and delivering against product road maps that give scalable, profitable and sustainable revenue. This team is the primary customer and market interface for Transport. The Business Line Head is responsible for market positioning, pipeline, partnerships and customer success. The Business Line Head has full P&L ownership and is responsible for the successful delivery of annual and long term financial and strategic goals within the Transport market.
Three important skills for this role are leadership, technical & commercial, and interpersonal skills. This person must regularly communicate with customers, partners, suppliers, senior management and internal peer groups to integrate both the voice of our customers and market factors into our plans in order to meet financial and strategic goals.
Purpose of the Role
The Head of Transport is responsible for the leadership of the Transport business line and is accountable for growing a profitable portfolio of sustainable products, services and go-to-market partnerships in the Transport sector to deliver scalable double-digit growth over the next 5 years.
STRATEGIC DEVELOPMENT: Lead the Transport Business inputs to the annual McLaren Applied Strategic Business Plan. Relying on trends and market analysis, deliver a well-informed strategic road map and quantified growth plan for Transport market.
STRATEGIC EXECUTION: Full ownership for the successful delivery of the Transport short and long term financial and market share targets. Leverage experience in the Transport to enable and empower team members to:
Deliver existing contracts for rail communications with UK and international providers through appropriate processes and resource deployments, ensuring both delivery KPIs and P&L targets are met.
Oversee major contract processes and negotiations.
Formulate, deploy and oversee pricing and channel policies to ensure maximum and sustained value attainment.
Develop new transport communication software products in collaboration with technical partners and the Engineering team.
Provide market intelligence and clearly defined customer needs to the Product Management teams to support the associated Product Line strategies and roadmaps.
SALES GROWTH: Develop segment product and marketing strategies to increase market share in existing markets and identify and develop new markets. Introduce product marketing and sales programmes with go-to-market partners to deliver top line sales objectives. Lead and secure major contract wins. Together with the Marketing team, oversee the Transport marketing campaign.
ORGANISATIONAL ALIGNMENT: Ensure coordination of strategies, policies and practices with other business line leaders, product line management, engineering and sales colleagues. Responsibilities include:
Support the necessary arbitration and alignment of product features and costs with the Product Line Management organisation. Provide longer-term market trends and customer unmet needs to support roadmaps that will result in a pipeline of suitable technologies.
Work closely with the sales team, ensure that the sales force are provided with the necessary information and tools to penetrate potential tier 1 customers, giving them the know-how and industry background to be credible in front of the customer.
Ensure collaborative, cross-functional working with the Engineering team to support the development and on-time delivery of new products and technologies for Transport customers.
Contribute to the broader business through membership of the Business leadership team.
ORGANISATIONAL CAPABILITY: Drive ongoing organizational capability improvements through supporting the creation and periodic cycles of improvement to associated business processes. Work together with the Human Resources to retain, grow and develop talent. Mentor across the group as appropriate.
MARGIN ENHANCEMENT: Achieve organizational objectives of growth and profitability through effective market sales management (i.e. optimal product mix, maximized value-based pricing and minimized product cost from market specifications management) and careful management of ongoing contract delivery.
CASH: Working closely with the product line leadership, ensure that the product demands are closely aligned with the operational functions, including supply chain. Manage product and service mixes to maximise cash flows as needed.
MARKET POSITIONING: Ensure McLaren Applied is recognised as a world-class expert and enhance our reputation as an innovator and technology leader in the Transport market.
Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience
Significant experience of winning and sustaining technology service contracts in the Transport sector, delivering against P&L targets.
Strong technical background applied in the Transport sector. Engineering or Science Degree desirable.
Technical marketing experience gained in an established engineering or technology business, ideally with leading-edge technologies in fast-growing enterprises.
Strategic foresight, commercial acumen and financial literacy.
Delivery focused and proactive.
Ability to undertake a market facing and engaging role, influencing both externally and internally to achieve desired goals.
Excellent team and line management skills, able to work successfully in a matrix organisation.
Extensive customer facing experience.
Strong presentation skills.
Effective and proven interpersonal skills.
