McLaren Automotive has announced a £500m (US$673m) investment program to expand its UK manufacturing, engineering and operations, enabling it to accelerate the development of its next generation of models.

Nick Collins, chief executive officer of McLaren Group and McLaren Automotive, said, “This investment gives us the platform to grow, develop and build on what makes us distinctive, while investing in the people, technologies and products that will keep us competitive for decades to come.”

Expanding McLaren Automotive in the UK

The investment will enable McLaren Automotive to expand its production capacity and increase vehicle output in the UK, including the production of the next generation of McLaren models and a newly confirmed performance SUV. The expansion will be supported by a new vehicle assembly facility planned for the UK.

For the first time, McLaren Automotive’s future powertrains will be designed and built in-house, starting with two new engines and transmissions. The move will support the company’s hybrid powertrain strategy, building on its use of hybrid technology, which began with the McLaren P1.

McLaren Automotive will also expand operations at the McLaren production center in Woking and its carbon-fiber manufacturing and research facility in South Yorkshire at the McLaren Composites Technology Centre.

The company has recently opened two new UK sites – a design and innovation center at the McLaren Creation Centre in Bicester, and a testing and vehicle development facility in the Midlands. Together with its Woking headquarters and South Yorkshire carbon-fiber facility, they form an integrated UK operation, from design through to advanced manufacturing.

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham said, “McLaren Automotive is doubling down on Britain, keeping the design, the engineering and the building of every future car here, and taking on a thousand more people to do it.

“Their investment will create high-quality apprenticeships, jobs and drive growth far beyond their factory gates. It is how you get skilled work, decent wages and pride back into a place.

“It’s this kind of partnership between government and business that will help us reindustrialize communities and make every part of Britain better off. I want young people to see that and know there is a future for them in making things, wherever they grew up.”

New products, skills and jobs

McLaren Automotive is “building a complete portfolio around the supercar”, the auto maker said, and plans to enter new categories including the performance SUV segment. The investment will provide the manufacturing capacity, technology and skills required to bring its future models to market.

The program will create at least 1,000 new direct and indirect jobs across McLaren’s UK operations by 2032, while safeguarding existing roles. McLaren Automotive’s UK manufacturing workforce is expected to double, supported by new apprenticeships aimed at developing future talent.

The investment will strengthen McLaren Automotive’s expertise in lightweighting, carbon fiber and advanced manufacturing, while securing critical intellectual property and production capabilities in the UK.

Racing karts offer a direct, hands-on way to experience motorsport, but the cost of a kart, along with transportation, storage and maintenance requirements, can present barriers to entry.

Toyota Gazoo Racing (GR) has launched the GR Kart, an entry-level racing kart developed to broaden hands-on access to motorsports for children and families. Karting serves as an entry point to the joy of controlling a vehicle and is the first form of competition many race drivers experience.

Each GR Kart is based on experience and ingenuity gained in Toyota automotive manufacturing. The Gamagori GR Kart Workshop produces the GR Kart, and the workshop’s small scale makes it ideal for tackling challenges and quickly testing innovative ideas and technologies. Guided by Toyota Production System (TPS) principles, the workshop is committed to ensuring quality and continuously improving its manufacturing processes. Through these initiatives, GR is working to reduce costs and aims to create products that make it easier for newcomers to start and continue karting.

A belt-drive system eliminates soiling from chain oil and includes an automatic tensioner that removes the need to adjust belt tension periodically. The engine also has a built-in, self-charging battery, eliminating the need to mount a separate battery and the hassle of charging.

A newly developed diaphragm carburetor designed for four-stroke engines minimizes the impact of fuel-level fluctuations caused by lateral g-forces because there is no float chamber. A primer pump draws fuel into the carburetor before starting, reportedly making pre-departure engine priming effortless.

Mercedes-AMG has revealed the CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung and said that development of the vehicle focused on driving dynamics, combining a 646hp (475kW) V8 biturbo engine with rear-wheel drive, reduced weight and a chassis tuned for precision. A wide-body design with wider tracks, carbon-fiber components and dedicated aerodynamic elements is intended to improve its dynamic performance.

“For me, the Mercedes‑AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung represents the very essence of AMG,” said Dr Stefan Weckbach, chairman of the management board of Mercedes‑AMG and head of the Mercedes‑Benz G‑Class and Mercedes‑Maybach business units. “This vehicle came to life because highly rational engineers dreamed of a highly irrational car. We turned that dream into reality in the form of maximum driving dynamics and an unparalleled driving experience.”

Driving dynamics as the development mission

The project was driven by the AMG engineering team. A small group initially built a prototype, with the aim of developing the vehicle as a complete performance system rather than applying a series of individual upgrades or creating a conventional special edition.

The current Mercedes-AMG CLE Coupé provides the technical foundation. Compared with the standard vehicle, weight was reduced by around 170kg, while the bodyshell also underwent extensive modifications. The resulting comprehensive rebuild, carried out to Affalterbach manufactory standards, forms the basis for the Spezialanfertigung designation.

AMG 4.0‑liter V8 biturbo engine with 646hp

At the heart of the CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung is an enhanced AMG M177 EVO 4.0‑liter V8 biturbo engine, with an output of 646hp (475kW). Maximum torque stands at 850Nm and is available across a broad engine speed range from 2,500 to 4,500rpm.

To ensure thermal stability even under extreme loads, the V8 engine features three separate cooling circuits: a high-temperature circuit for the engine itself, and two low-temperature circuits for charge-air and transmission-oil cooling as well as the 48V components. In the Mercedes‑AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung, these systems have been enhanced to meet the demands of an exceptionally challenging operating profile, ranging from intensive racetrack use to very high ambient temperatures.

The characteristic V8 soundtrack is amplified by a bespoke high-performance exhaust system.

From all-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive

The AMG Performance 4MATIC+ drivetrain system of the donor vehicle has been removed entirely, with the CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung transmitting its power exclusively to the rear axle. The switch to rear-wheel drive reduces weight while fundamentally altering the car’s dynamic character. An electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential optimizes torque distribution between the rear wheels through variable locking action as required. This enhances traction, driving stability and overall vehicle dynamics. Under suitable driving conditions, it can also support controlled drifting.

Short shift times

The standard AMG Speedshift TCT 9G transmission combines efficiency with dynamic performance. When required, the torque-converter transmission can execute multiple downshifts in rapid succession to access the engine’s full performance almost instantaneously.

The Mercedes‑AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung’s Launch Control system has been adapted to the rear-wheel-drive layout. The new Mythos model accelerates from a standstill to 200km/h in 11.4 seconds. Top speed is 310km/h.

Purpose-developed steel coilover suspension for precise handling

The suspension has likewise been optimized. It features a steel coilover suspension system jointly developed by Mercedes‑AMG and KW Automotive. The setup enables exceptionally precise tuning to suit driving style, circuit characteristics, individual preferences and intended use.

At the heart of the suspension is four-way-adjustable damper technology with independently configurable low-speed and high-speed rebound and compression settings.

AMG ceramic high-performance composite braking system

The AMG ceramic high-performance composite braking system is engineered for extreme loads and delivers consistently high braking performance, even during intensive racetrack use. An integral part of the system is a specially developed brake-cooling concept tailored to the Mercedes‑AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung. Large air intakes in the front bumper and dedicated airflow-guiding elements significantly improve heat dissipation.

At the front axle, internally ventilated and perforated ceramic brake discs measuring 420 x 40mm are paired with six-piston fixed calipers and long-fiber technology. At the rear axle, internally ventilated and perforated ceramic brake discs measuring 360 x 32mm are combined with single-piston floating calipers.

Greater torsional rigidity and precision

To achieve the exceptional driving dynamics of the Mercedes‑AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung, the body structure has been engineered to withstand the highest loads. Additional reinforcements and an integrated rollover bar significantly increase bodyshell rigidity.

“The Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung sets new benchmarks with its uncompromising presence and driving dynamics,” said Bastian Baudy, chief design officer at Mercedes-Benz Group. “Through the extensive use of carbon fiber, we were able to create a particularly distinctive appearance. The Circuit of the Americas hosted testing for Ferrari’s 499P on September 8 and 9. A 499P wearing a camouflage livery ahead of the 2027 season took to the Texas circuit following the fifth FIA WEC race, where Ferrari claimed its first victory of the season with the number 50 crew.

James Calado, Antonio Fuoco, Nicklas Nielsen and Yifei Ye took turns at the wheel of the development car to test technical and aerodynamic solutions that could be introduced from next season.

The sessions enabled the team to continue its scheduled development work, building on the program that began at Monza in July.

Calado, Fuoco, Nielsen and Ye also took the opportunity to test their respective 499P race cars for the current 2026 season on the 5.513km Circuit of the Americas.

The Maranello manufacturer will return to FIA WEC action in Japan over the weekend of September 27 for the 6 Hours of Fuji.

FIA Formula 2 has unveiled its new car for the 2027, 2028 and 2029 seasons at an event held in the Formula 1 paddock at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza in Italy. Building on the current generation, the F2 2027 car represents an evolution of the existing design and is intended to further support the championship’s role as a stepping stone to Formula 1.

The car retains the 2026 Dallara chassis to help control costs, but features redesigned front and rear wings. The revised aerodynamics are intended to improve close following and racing, while the styling brings the car closer to the latest Formula 1 design direction.

Powering the car is the proven 3.4-liter turbo-charged Mecachrome engine, which continues to run on advanced sustainable fuel supplied by Aramco, first successfully introduced to the series in 2025. Pirelli, F2’s exclusive tire supplier since 2017, will continue to provide tires specifically developed for the championship.

One of the key technical evolutions introduced for the 2027 generation is the addition of an onboard starter. To accommodate this feature, Hewland has developed an evolution of the current gearbox, enabling the integration of the onboard starter system.

The F2 2027 car retains the FIA’s 2024 specifications for braking performance, steering effort and cockpit ergonomics, ensuring the car remains accessible to a broad range of drivers. The Marelli electronic and hydraulic systems package also remains the same, including the EM Motorsport Marshalling system.

Mohammed Ben Sulayem, president of the FIA, said, “Formula 2 is where the next generation of top drivers are made. The new 2027 car raises the bar on safety, delivers closer racing, improves accessibility and reinforces our commitment to sustainability.”

Bruno Michel, FIA Formula 2 Championship CEO, commented, “When working on this new car, our first goal was to ensure it remains the perfect tool to prepare drivers for F1. Together with the FIA, we have opted for the current chassis and focused on redesigning the front and the rear wings. This enables us to keep the costs managed, while bringing the design closer to the look of an F1 car while enhancing the F2 car’s ability to deliver close racing.

“We have added an onboard starter that will simplify the operational side for the teams and will allow the drivers to restart their car after spinning or stalling on track, and we’ve been continuing our work with our partners Aramco and Pirelli on driver preparation, sustainability and providing the fans with a great show.”

The 2027 car first hit the track at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya last June and has since undergone an intensive development program jointly with Dallara, including wind tunnel and aero tests.

A first kit will be delivered to the teams in December 2026, with the second kit to be delivered in January 2027.

Hankook has been appointed the official tire supplier for the RC2, RC3 and RC4 classes in the Kroon-Oil Belgian Rally Championship for the next three seasons. The tire maker is already the exclusive supplier to the FIA World Rally Championship, as well as several national and international championships.

“Throughout 2027, 2028 and 2029, tires for the RC2, RC3 and RC4 classes in the Kroon-Oil Belgian Rally Championship will be supplied exclusively by Hankook,” said Xavier Schene, director general of RACB Sport.

“For competitors, these tires offer an attractive solution from a competitive perspective as the Korean manufacturer has been the exclusive tire partner of the FIA World Rally Championship since 2025.

“From next season onward, this will also give WRC drivers the opportunity to use Belgian Rally Championship events as test rallies in preparation for WRC events. Hankook tires are also used in the Junior ERC.”

As a global partner of the FIA since the beginning of this year, Hankook’s involvement in the Kroon-Oil Belgian Rally Championship further expands its presence in rally sport. Continuity across disciplines will be maintained, with Kronos Tires cotinuing to distribute the tires.

The Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL) completed the first multi-car autonomous race in Europe at the Imola Circuit in Italy on September 5, 2026, as part of ACI Racing Weekend. Kinetiz (UAE) won the league’s inaugural international race, across 12 laps of one of the most technically demanding circuits.

Organized by ASPIRE, part of Abu Dhabi’s Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC), A2RL brings together key players across Abu Dhabi’s autonomous mobility ecosystem, with strategic oversight from the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council (SASC).

The race brought together five fully autonomous race cars: race winner Kinetiz (UAE); second placed Constructor Racing (Germany); PoliMOVE (Italy), which took third; Unimore (Italy), which finished fourth; and 2024 and 2025 champions TUM (Germany), which came fifth. Each team competed with identical EAV-25 hardware, placing the performance differential in software: perception, planning, control and real-time decision making.

Two-time consecutive A2RL champion TUM saw its winning streak end after encountering a technical issue on the formation lap resulting in the car returning to the pitlane before the rolling race start.

The fastest lap was set by pole-sitter and race leader Unimore at 1 minute 40 seconds, before a technical issue brought the car to a halt. PoliMOVE, which had reached the race’s top speed of 252.3km/h and was running within a second of Unimore, was unable to avoid the slowed car and collided with its rear, ending both teams’ races. The incident handed the lead to Kinetiz, which held the position to the chequered flag.

Faisal al Bannai, secretary general of the Advanced Technology Research Council, said, “A2RL reflects how Abu Dhabi approaches advanced technology: setting an ambitious challenge, bringing the best minds together and creating the conditions for accelerated progress. Imola put that approach to the test, with five autonomous cars navigating the uncertainty and pressure of a live race. Seeing Kinetiz take the win marks an important moment for the UAE, while the wider value lies in what the race revealed about reliability, resilience and real-time decision making. These insights will help advance autonomous systems far beyond racing.”

ASPIRE CEO Stephane Timpano added, “What we saw here gives us a new measure of how these systems perform and adapt under pressure.”

A true test

Defined by elevation changes, narrow racing lines, limited run-off and difficult overtaking zones, Imola tested how autonomous systems manage grip, traffic, positioning and overtaking under sustained pressure. The race required the AI to continuously respond to other competitors, deciding when to attack, defend and adapt its planned trajectory as the race developed.

The road to Imola

In advance of the race, teams prepared through a condensed physical testing period of just nine days across varying conditions including rain and, at one point, hail. The newly fitted wet-weather kit enabled all five teams to run, collectively completing 38 laps.

To supplement physical testing and give teams the opportunity to enhance their code, A2RL’s Sim Sprint returned this season, featuring high-fidelity digital twins including Yas Marina, the A2RL Autodrome, Suzuka and Imola to help teams develop and validate their algorithms.

Alessandro Tucci, executive director, House of Grand Challenges at ASPIRE, said, “The performance teams demonstrated during the race is the result of defined development strategy built on more than 5,000 hours of simulation testing and racing in 2025. Racing in Imola was a fundamental step for A2RL evolution and we are proud of the results achieved by the teams and A2RL organization. Bringing that preparation to a circuit like Imola is how we keep raising the competitive standard of A2RL.”

What’s next

A2RL will return to Yas Marina Circuit for its next race.

Lessons from Imola will now feed back into the R&D program in Abu Dhabi. A2RL said that testing autonomous systems across circuits with materially different layouts and racing characteristics provides a stronger measure of their ability to adapt, and continues A2RL’s role as a public testbed for autonomous technology and reinforces Abu Dhabi’s position as a hub for applied AI and autonomous systems innovation.

Following a review of its medium- to long-term strategy, business environment and allocation of resources, Dunlop has decided to withdraw from the karting tire business. It will continue to supply products to existing customers until December 31, 2027. Dunlop has developed, manufactured and supplied karting tires since 1976.

Karting is widely regarded as a foundation of motorsport. Dunlop’s products have supported a broad range of karting participants, from recreational drivers to young competitors progressing toward top-level categories. The company says its tires have contributed to the growth of karting and the development of future drivers.

Dunlop currently supplies tires homologated by the Commission Internationale de Karting-FIA (CIK-FIA), under the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), as well as tires accredited by the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF).

“We would like to express our sincere appreciation to all customers, users, and related organizations who have used and supported our products over the years,” the company said in a statement.

The Nova ZZXC is the first all-new tire designed, developed and manufactured from the ground up by Nova Motorsport. Created specifically for Cross Car (XC), the tire marks a new chapter for Nova Motorsport as the brand expands from producing proven Avon Motorsport products to developing its own original competition tires.

Created specifically to meet the demands of Cross Car racing, the ZZXC extends Nova Motorsport’s mixed-surface competition portfolio alongside its existing multichampionship-winning Rallycross (RX) and Autocross (AX) products.

The development concept

Nova Motorsport drew upon the decades of competition tire knowledge within its engineering team, including experience gained through the design, development and manufacture of Avon Motorsport products for Rally, Rallycross and Autocross competition. According to the company, the result is a highly innovative tire package that offers teams a series of unique advantages.

The Nova ZZXC rear tire features a distinctive asymmetrical tread pattern. Unlike a directional design, the rear tire can be fitted on either side of the vehicle, meaning competitors only need to carry one spare rear tire rather than separate left- and right-sided products.

Nova Motorsport developed the rear tire’s outer shoulder with larger tread blocks to maximize durability under load. In contrast, a more open inner tread pattern has been created to generate greater traction. The tire design aligns with the relatively low levels of camber typically used in Cross Car chassis setups.

The rear tire has been developed to enable competitors to adjust the profile by altering the tire pressure. Lower pressures create a flatter profile ideal for dry conditions; increasing the pressure can create a more crowned profile better suited to wet and muddy surfaces. In these conditions, the aggressive open tread allows the larger blocks to engage more effectively while helping the tire evacuate mud.

For the front tires, Nova Motorsport retained the directional characteristics familiar to Cross Car competitors while developing a distinctive new tread. An arrow-shaped central block combines with larger blocks on either side, providing better management of the wear and loading generated during aggressive steering and cornering.

Philip Carder, product category manager at Nova Motorsport, said, “From the outset, we were determined to create a genuine Cross Car tire that would provide a new level of performance, rather than adapt a product developed for another discipline.”

Successful benchmark test

Nova Motorsport conducted a comprehensive track evaluation of the Nova ZZXC at Circuit Parc de la Serra in Mollerussa, Spain, with David Méat, three-time FIA European Cross Car Champion, at the wheel.

The test program evaluated the tire across a wide range of performance criteria, including start-line traction, acceleration, braking, steering response, cornering behavior and durability. The Nova ZZXC was also benchmarked directly against established competitor products.

“Testing on such a demanding circuit and in extreme conditions gave the Nova ZZXC nowhere to hide,” said Méat. “The traction off the start was particularly strong, and that gave me a lot of confidence through the corners and into the braking areas. There was plenty of lateral grip when the tire was loaded up, and the overall performance was very encouraging for the first test of a completely new product.” Further validation was provided by champion driver Olivier Barré at Circuit Nicolas Klein in Is-sur-Tille, France.

The Nova ZZXC was presented in Lohéac, France, in August 2026, during Round 6 of the eight-round Rallycross France championship.

A few weeks after firing up its engine for the first time in ORECA‘s workshops, the Ford Hypercar has completed its first on-track test sessions.

The LMDh prototype first carried out an initial low-speed run at the Paul Ricard Circuit’s Driving Center, before continuing its test program at Le Castellet Airport and then at the Paul Ricard Circuit, right next to ORECA’s Technocentre where the car was designed and developed.

Dan Sayers, WEC Hypercar program manager at Ford Racing said, “Reaching Paul Ricard and getting the car through its shakedown and three full days of running is exactly the milestone we set out to hit. Everything we did in the buildup – the dyno work in Dearborn, the fire-up in France, the countless hours in the sim – was about making sure that when we rolled out onto track, we were ready to be plug and play. There’s a long list of milestones still ahead of us before Q1 2027, but these past couple of weeks has given the team a lot of confidence and strong foundations to build on.”

From design to track

The prototype – the result of close collaboration between Ford Racing and ORECA –  was jointly developed by teams who have been working for several months at ORECA’s Technocentre to prepare for its return to competition in 2027.

Hugues de Chaunac, president of the ORECA Group, commented, “Seeing this Hypercar take to the track for the first time is a powerful moment for all the teams involved in this project. After several months of close collaboration with Ford Racing, these first real-world outings mark an important step in the car’s development. At ORECA, we are proud to contribute to the return of a brand as iconic as Ford to the highest level of Endurance racing, and we are eager to continue this journey with them through to their competitive debut in 2027.”

All six Ford Racing Hypercar drivers attended the test during the week. Logan Sargeant, Matt Campbell, Tom Blomqvist and Mike Rockenfeller took turns behind the wheel, while British drivers Sebastian Priaulx and Nick Yelloly were also on site to gather feedback and prepare for the next phase of testing.

Mark Rushbrook, global director of Ford Racing, said, “This is only the first step of a long and demanding development road, but the fact that all six of our drivers were on hand, working together and pushing this program forward, tells you everything about the spirit we’re building at Ford Racing.”

This first phase of testing marks an essential step in the development of the Ford Hypercar before starting a more intensive test program, in preparation for its homologation under LMDh technical regulations.

Ford Racing Hypercar driver Matt Campbell said, “I’ve been here for the whole test and from my side, it’s gone smoothly. I’ve seen fans online raving about how awesome the sound is, but from inside the cockpit, it’s on another level – it’s absolutely deafening! I’m genuinely excited for what’s ahead with this car. We know there’s a long road in front of us, but this has been a really positive start.”

The Ford Hypercar will continue its development program through several test sessions at European circuits through the end of 2026, before heading to the USA to continue its preparation. Ford Racing will make its return to the highest level of Endurance racing in 2027 with a two-car entry in the top category of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC).
