Whiting inspects Korea International Circuit

FIA Formula 1 race director and safety delegate, Charlie Whiting made a site inspection of the Korea International Circuit (KIC) on July 15. Construction of the venue is due for completion in August ahead of the inaugural Korean Grand Prix on October 22-24.

Whiting made a detailed inspection of the track and facilities including the completed race control tower, the main grandstand, and the pit garages. He was accompanied by Yung Cho Chung, who is chairman of both the Korea Automobile Racing Association (KARA), and the Korea Auto Valley Operation (KAVO), which will operate the Grand Prix. Whiting was briefed on the construction schedule and expressed his satisfaction with the progress. The next inspection is scheduled for the end of August.

Said Chung: “As anticipated, we had a successful visit and we are confident the drivers, teams and Formula 1 fans will enjoy the Korea International Circuit.”

Designed by Hermann Tilke, the Korea International Circuit has a dual structure: the 5.615km Formula 1 track, which will include elements of a street circuit and has a 1.2km straight, and a shorter, permanent circuit of 3.045km. Up to 130,000 spectators will be accommodated at the circuit, with 16,000 seats in the main grandstand.
