Xtrac gears up for new IndyCar
July 25’s Edmonton IZOD IndyCar race will see Xtrac’s existing IndyCar gearbox exceed two million miles of track running. The landmark comes as the company, with bases in the UK and Indianapolis, USA, is preparing a new transmission design for the recently announced IndyCar 2012 chassis/engine package.
Xtrac has supplied the IRL since 2000, and its contract currently extends through the 2011 season. Now the firm is developing an advanced lightweight gearbox to suit the new technical specification. The targeted minimum weight for the entire new car is 625kg, nearly 90kg lighter than the current car.
“We look forward to submitting our proposals for a new lightweight transmission and would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Dallara for winning the contract to supply the new chassis,” said Peter Digby, president and managing director at Xtrac. “We have already indicated to the series promoters that we are willing to relocate to the new Speedway redevelopment area, which is very close to our existing facility in Indianapolis, where we’ve been based since 2003.”
The currently used six-speed transaxle is Xtrac’s second-generation IndyCar transmission. With it, particular attention was paid to the gearshift and in 2008 Xtrac added a MegaLine paddleshift system.
