Four constructors bid for IZOD IndyCar 2012 contract
It has been revealed that four chassis constructors have made proposals to the Indy Racing League (IRL) to win the contract for the proposed new IndyCar race car from 2012. The four are current supplier Dallara, former Champ Car chassis builders Lola and Swift, and a new group, Delta Wing. The winning design would have to be built in the USA; to achieve this, Dallara is proposing to set up a new factory in Speedway, Indiana.
In a statement, Huntingdon, UK-based Lola said its car would offer a choice of two body styles. Owner Martin Birrane hopes the company's strong US racing heritage will work in its favor. “Lola's history in US racing stretches back to 1965 and includes three Indy 500 wins, Can-Am, sports car and Champ Car title successes.”
Meanwhile Swift’s director of motorsports, Casper van der Schoot, commented: “IndyCar fans love to see the engines and mechanical bits normally shielded behind bodywork. These concepts incorporate retro-styling cues that hark back to the 50s, 60s and 70s IndyCar eras.”
