Systec SVS Vacuum Coatings GmbH & Co. KG. (a subsidiary of SYSTEC Group) provides innovative surface solutions for decreasing friction losses and improving wear performance of various components of racing vehicles, for example valvetrain parts, transmissions or the like.
This is achieved through the application of metal- and carbon-based coatings, produced by the state-of-the-art technology of high intensity pulsed magnetron sputtering (HIPIMS), coupled with Systec’s proprietary A-UBM deposition technique. These coatings are a result of a two-year development effort, which has been undertaken by Systec to produce a new generation of amorphous carbon (DLC) and metal nitride/carbide coatings. The ambitious goal was to considerably improve those properties of the coatings that are critical for their performance in the most stringent environments, like racing valvetrains.
Modest adhesion – one of the traditional weak spots of DLC coatings – was addressed by implementing HIPIMS – assisted metal ion implantation (cold diffusion). This provided an enhanced interface, vital for secure bonding of the highly stressed DLC or ceramic layers to the substrate. Having secured the adhesion, the development then focused on the coating itself, where the application of Systec A-UBM processing led to achieving a coating hardness of up to HV4000.
The resulting NoveLC DLC coatings have proved to be what they were intended to be: a high-performance, new-generation family of protective films with an impressive set of functional properties, including outstanding wear resistance, friction and adhesion. Three formulations of NoveLC (F1, F2 and F3) cover the whole application spectrum: from the hardest F1 version to the softer, more lubricious F3 type. Extensive lab and field tests, including in racing valvetrains, demonstrated extraordinary performance, proving the advanced nature of the new coatings.
